The Xuande-Xiphoian Individual Rifle (XIR) is a gas operated, conventional rotary bolt bullpup rifle. The gas system features a gas piston located above the barrel and a 6 position manual gas regulator. This version, the Mark 6, was introduced across the Armed Services in 2011 through 2013.
The weapon is a bullpup design, which places the magazine behind the trigger. Xuande-Xiphoi has a long association with bullpup designs, as far back as the 1950s. This is due to the highly mechanised nature of the Xuande-Xiphoian Army in particular, but also accounts for the needs of the other services. A bullpup design allows a weapon to have a longer barrel in an overall shorter package, providing greater mobility for the user while retaining the stopping power of a conventionally designed firearm. The XIR is designed to be ambidextrous. It contains an ambidextrous forward ejection port and viewing window that allows for tool free forward ejector side change. A non reciprocating ambidextrous charging handle is installed on both sides of the gun, and three position safety / selector levers (semi-automatic or fully automatic) and magazine release are provided on both sides of the pistol grip. The rifle is able to receive a calibre conversion kit that allow the rifle to change calibre. The standard calibre used by the Armed Services is the 6.5mm Grendel calibre. Each barrel used by the XIR is constructed from high strength 4150 Chromium Molybdenum, and has been given a salt bath nitride coating for superb protection against rust. Calibre conversion provides a unique feature in which the rifle chassis can accept both intermediate cartridges and full-powered rifle cartridges on the same serial numbered platform. This is useful for special purpose personnel needs. The outer shell of the firearm is made from impact-resistant polymer with an aluminium receiver. The weapon is highly modular, and is equipped with useful tools that allow additional functionality. Standard modifications that comprise the XIR platform include:
The standard-issue optic for this weapon is the Spectre 1-4x optical sight; Armed Services members are trained to effectively operate and maintain this optical sight to the same standard as their weapon, due to its exceptional capability and cost. The rifle is, in all constructions, highly accurate and reliable and easy to use effectively by trained operators. The Xuande-Xiphoian Armed Services describes the weapon as being able to be used in the following variants:
