The Thaumas class of training vessels are utilised in Xuande-Xiphoian service, amongst other training postings, to provide high-quality service training to "cadets", generally being new midshipmen and newly promoted Petty Officers, providing crucial leadership experiences aboard a modern vessel, designed to incorporate radars and systems very similar or identical to those used on a majority of XX Navy vessels.
Compared to regular Navy vessels, operations spaces including the bridge, Combat Information Centre, engine control room, and so forth are designed to be wider than other vessels consideration of the cadet's needs . As an education and training facility, there is a trainee auditorium that can accommodate 170 seated candidates, and 230 including standing. At the rear of the trainee auditorium, there is a training deck that can also be used as a helicopter deck , and a retractable tent that can also be used as a reception venue. Weapons are limited for practice operations only, and include an Otobreda 76 mm rapid-fire gun on the front deck four torpedo tubes, similar or identical to those used on other surface combatants. Traditional saluting cannons can be brought to the training deck and fired in salute when required. Additional self-defence weapons mounts for crew served weapons can be used, though generally for marksmanship training only. Based on recent trends, the engine has been changed from a steam turbine to a combined gas turbine and diesel engine, and the engine layout has emphasized training efficiency rather than endurance. As the ship often sails overseas to perform ambassadorial and recruiting support roles for the XX Government, public rooms on the ship have been given more interior consideration than a general ship to perform this role. All messes and wardrooms on the vessel - being one each for the cadets, posted rates, and officers - are built in line with retractable walls. These walls can be retracted and furniture arranged so as to make a mess capable of hosting the entire ships company and guests. The room is thereafter decorated appropriately for the visit of VIP guests. Two 11 metre RHIBs can be launched from the Thaumas class vessels. Training officers are assigned to single or double cabins according to rank; junior posted rates in berthings of four; trainees are assigned to berthings of nine, with three stacked racks. |
