The Polyergaleío class of emergency response vessels are strategically positioned across Xuande-Xiphoi, able to respond to emergencies including oil spill and pollution response, search and rescue, and firefighting. The Coast Guard operates these vessels, and can be deployed into overseas environments including dangerous waters to support the Armed Services.
The vessel utilises a wave-piercing sea-axe hull, which provides the vessel with a high speed capability in harsh weather conditions. The vessels construction is aluminium in design, with a superstructure made from steel, and a multipurpose deck space of 240m². In the pollution response role, the vessel equips two oil sweeping arms, 1200 metre oil beam, and umbilical hose reel. Capacity allows for 66 cubic metres aboard plus inflatable containers. For firefighting, the vessel equips external firefighting capabilities including water and foam dispensers. Additional equipment includes an emergency towing +10 ton towing line, crane, fast rescue boat, substantial medical room, dispersant systems and ballistic protection for crew access spaces. Aboard, facilities for accomodating up to 40 rescuees aboard the vessel are available; in an emergency, deck space permits for 500+ rescuees to be recovered aboard a single vessel. The FSC 5009 is installed with gyro and magnetic compasses, echo sounder, radar, automatic identification system (AIS), and global positioning system (GPS) /differential global positioning system (DGPS). No armaments are equipped on the vessel, and it sails under a Red Crystal in contested environments. Generous cabins in single, two-man, and some four-man berthings are made available for periods of ensurance up to one week. The crew is also provided with a cold store, a pantry and a mess hall. |
