The M4 Benelli is a shotgun system used across the Armed Services in a variety of combat and security roles, notable for being easy for members to learn to use and operate effectively while having a huge amount of firepower and effectiveness.
The Benelli is a gas-operated, semi-automatic shotgun. Its function is designed around an auto-regulating gas-operated (ARGO) system. The short-stroke design uses two self-cleaning stainless steel pistons located just ahead of the chamber to function opposite a rotating bolt, eliminating the need for the complex mechanisms found on similar weapons. The ARGO incorporates only four parts: two symmetrical fore-end shrouds containing two small steel pistons that push directly against the bolt. The weapon is self-regulating and reliably semi-automatic for use with shotshells of varying lengths and power levels. It can fire 2.75 inch (70 mm) and 3 inch (76 mm) shells of differing propellant loads without any operator adjustments and in any combination. Low-power rounds, such as less-lethal baton rounds, must be cycled manually. The buttstock is collapsible on the weapon. Collapsing the buttstock shortens the weapon by almost 20 cm, allowing easier storage and transportation; furthermore, it permits better maneuverability around tight corners and over obstacles. In Xuande-Xiphoian service the weapon is also equipped with a reflex or red dot sight as appropriate to the situational requirements. The weapon is well-built and mecahnically simple, and is considered one of the most reliable weapons in the Armed Services. |
